Time Saved vs. Time Served

ArtWorks painted a mural that celebrates and uplifts women who are returning citizens, who have previously been incarcerated. This mural depicts women living in our community who have returned home, became leaders and sought to break down the stigma surrounding those with criminal records who have re-entered society.

The mural’s design features 5 women. From the left: Sheila Donaldson Johnson, senior paralegal at OJPC, DeAnna Hoskins, president and CEO of JustLeadership USA, a national organization dedicated to decarceration and who created the first office of re-entry in Hamilton County; Tyra Patterson, social justice activist and community outreach strategy specialist with Ohio Justice and Policy Center (OJPC); Tracy Brumfield, the founder of RISE, a publication that provides information and resources to inmates in preparation for release; and Belinda Coulter-Harris who now works at Cincinnati Works, where she helps to connect people coming home to jobs and resources.

Time Saved vs. Time Served was brought to life through a team of eight Youth Apprentices and two Teaching Artists. The mural design was directed by Patterson and Russell Craig, an accomplished artist and returning citizen from Philadelphia. Jayme Santini, a local artist who is a returning citizen, co-created the mural with Patterson and Craig. This mural is ArtWorks’ 200th. Learn more about this work of art.
