Sew Taft in partnership with the Taft Art Museum A project of the 2006 and 2007ArtWorks Summer Program
Sew Taft 2007: Apprentices worked to create new pieces of art inspired by the works in the collection at the Taft Museum of Art. Working with fabric, clay and lots of thread, these fiber-happy Apprentices set about deciding whether they would create a pillow, apron, doll, or in some cases all three. Of course, before this happened, the whole project toured the Taft Museum: looking at the different works of art, learning about the museum itself, and the story behind it—the fact that the Taft was once a grand party house. Once the Sew Taft Apprentices began, though, they began with a vengeance. The amount that got done in a day at Sew Taft was amazing—within a week the room was beginning to fill up with embroidered fabric, the wire skeletons of in-progress dolls, and laughter. In the end, all of these components came together to result in a gallery of once-familiar pieces transformed through dazzling new interpretations, beautiful works of art.
Sew Taft 2006: When this project began, Sew Taft apprentices were introduced to the collection of works at the Taft Art Museum. Using their imaginations and experience with textiles, this group's goal was to recreate their favorite pieces from the Taft Museum with new insight, design, and flare. The apprentices' creations were exhibited at the ArtWorks Gallery as part of Figuratively Speaking : A Collection of Artists' Dolls in November, in the Main Library in February 2007, and will be auctioned off in May to benefit future Taft/ArtWorks partnerships.
