Tamara HarkavyTamara Harkavy
Director

Tamara Harkavy is the founding Director of ArtWorks. Started in 1996 as a job-training and employment program for talented teens, ArtWorks has become a leader in employing artists of all ages, creating public art and initiating innovation arts programming for the City of Cincinnati. Under her leadership, ArtWorks has employed more that 2000 teens and 400 artists to work on hundreds of performance, literary and visual arts projects. Many of these works of art remain in public and private venues around the city as testaments to the artistic talents of the participants.

Tamara and her team were also the creative force behind the Big Pig Gig and Bats Incredible. She led the acquisitions team for art in the Freedom Center. They are now working on Artworks' newest public art initiative, MuralWorks. Tamara believes that Art has incredible power to inspire, engage and transform lives.

ArtWorks has been awarded three prestigious Post-Corbett Awards, a Convention and Visitors Bureau Ambassador Award, a Community Impact Award from the American Marketing Association, and recognition from Hillary Rodham Clinton for the leadership and vision involved with ArtWorks. Tamara, a 2007 Cincinnati Enquirer Woman of the Year, also serves on the UC / DAAP Alumni Association, works with the Cincinnati Reds Community Fund, The Jewish Federation and many smaller arts organizations in an advisory capacity. She holds a Masters in Urban Planning from the University of Cincinnati and a bachelor's degree from Arizona State University.

Colleen Houston
Director of Programs

As Director of Programs, Colleen is responsible for project and partnership development, management and implementation of all ArtWorks programs including The Summer Program, After School, MuralWorks, and Commissioned Projects. In this capacity, Colleen serves as the chief community outreach liason for ArtWorks. As an ArtWorks staffer since 1997, Colleen has been instrumental in the growth and strategic positioning of the organization. Colleen now serves as a member of the strategic management team with the Director of Development, Director and Board President.

Prior to her tenure at ArtWorks, Colleen graduated with a BA from Warren Wilson College where she customized a degree in Public and Social Art. Colleen has served as a member of the Board of Trustees for the Artery and as an advisor to Visionaries and Voices. Additionally Colleen is an annual judge for Scholastic Art & Writing Awards and the AIA Architecture by Children Awards. Colleen continues to work as a consultant and volunteer to many community arts projects.

Heather Sherwood

Heather Sherwood
Director of Development

A development professional with ten years not-for-profit management experience, Heather's primary areas of concentration have included major gifts, institutional grant writing and community outreach. At ArtWorks, Heather serves as the lead fundraiser and financial officer responsible for the annual fund, grant writing, special events, individual and institutional giving efforts as well as oversight of all earned income streams. Heather is also a member of the strategic management team with the Director of Programs, Director and Board President.

Prior to joining the staff of ArtWorks, Heather served as Director of Development at the Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati. In this capacity, she was responsible for the oversight of the $34.1 million capital campaign, led fundraising efforts for the organization's $3 million annual budget and served as the staff liaison for the $20 million endowment campaign. Heather has also held positions at the Cincinnati Art Museum and Cincinnati Museum Center. A graduate of the University of Cincinnati's College-Conservatory of Music with an MA in Arts Administration and MBA, Heather also holds degrees in French and Art from Centre College.

Cathy Wash

Cathy Wash
Creative Services Manager

As the Creative Services Manager, Cathy oversees a number of small and large projects, which fall outside of the scope of the Summer Program. Cathy works closely with professional artists on a number of small projects for clients. She handles the Artist Registry, constantly providing artists with various opportunities in the arts. Cathy is the primary staff member spearheading Secret ArtWorks along with a committee of dedicated volunteers. Cathy also serves as the IT manager of ArtWorks, maintaining the ArtWorks website and "all things that plug in".

Cathy graduated in 2005 from the Art Academy of Cincinnati with a BFA in Printmaking. She has worked at ArtWorks since 1998, when she began as an Apprentice Artist in the Summer Program and has been working in an administrative role since 2000. Through the years Cathy has worked on public art projects like the Big Pig Gig and the Scoop City Ice Cream Truck, and served as a junior teacher, teaching artist, and summer photographer for the ArtWorks Summer and After-School Program. In addition to ArtWorks, Cathy also is a free-lance web designer for small businesses and artists. Cathy's most rewarding accomplishment has been the birth of her daughter, Sophie, in November 2006.

Allyson Knue
ArtWorks Program Coordinator

Program Coordinator Allyson Knue joined the ArtWorks staff in 2006 and contributes her talents to ArtWorks Summer and After-School job-training and employment programs.  Working on all facets of programming, Allyson supports Apprentice Artist recruitment and selection, the hiring of artistic staff and project development. She is responsible for volunteer management, event planning as well as ArtWorks' public relations and marketing efforts.  Allyson holds a BA in Communication and a Journalism Writing Certificate from the University of Cincinnati.

Adam Mysock

Adam Mysock
MuralWorks Coordinator

Raised in Cincinnati, Adam Mysock has worked with ArtWorks for eight years, as an Apprentice Artist, Senior Apprentice, Junior Teaching Artist, and Teaching Artist with the Summer Program. He has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Painting and Art History from Tulane University in New Orleans and a Master of Fine Art in Painting from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. As the coordinator for the new MuralWorks program, Adam assists the Director of Programming in engaging community groups and representatives to develop meaningful large-scale, public works of art. He is also responsible for collaborating with mural artists and apprentices to provide all necessary materials. Adam is also responsible for overseeing ArtWorks’ safety and health program, as required by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.  In addition, Adam is currently training for the 2009 World Beard and Moustache Championships.

Elaine Lynch

Elaine Lynch
ArtWorks Gallery Coordinator

Elaine Lynch was raised in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area. She attended George Mason University in Fairfax, VA where she earned her B.A. in Studio Arts, with a focus in painting, and a minor in Art History. After her undergraduate work, Elaine studied art in Tuscany, Italy and worked as Assistant to the Art Director of Allure magazine for two years in New York City.  In 2001, Elaine received a M.F.A. in painting from New Mexico State University.  She has taught at Western Illinois University, University of Cincinnati’s College of Design, Art, Architecture, and Planning, and The Art Academy of Cincinnati. 

Elaine was the recipient of an Illinois Humanities Council grant in conjunction with “Women Collecting:  Gender, Beauty and Ritual,” a traveling exhibition of her work. Her pink collection debuted at the Contemporary Arts Center in spring 2006, when she also joined The Dozens collaborative on Multiply, a film and music project that has been shown both locally and internationally. Most recently, she was lead artist on the Walnut Hills mural during the 2007 ArtWorks Summer Program, and now works full time as Gallery Coordinator.

Katie Labmeier

Melanie Derrick
Development Associate

A Northern Kentucky native and resident, Melanie is the most recent individual to join the ArtWorks team. As the Development Associate at ArtWorks, Melanie assists the Director of Development with the annual fund, grant writing, individual and institutional giving efforts and special events.

Prior to joining ArtWorks, Melanie worked at the Contemporary Arts Center (CAC) for the past six years, with the last three as the Visitor Services Manager. As Visitor Services Manager, Melanie oversaw the day-to-day operations of the front line areas, which included the admissions desk and the CAC Store staff as well as the overall management of the CAC Store, from the selection of merchandise, to all the visual displays as well as the management of the online store.

An artist at heart, Melanie graduated magna cum laude with a BFA in printmaking from Slippery Rock University, Pennsylvania.

Katie Labmeier

Katie Labmeier
Development Assistant

Katie joined ArtWorks in the fall of 2006. As the Development Assistant, Katie supports all development activities including database maintenance, gift acknowledgements, grant writing and special projects, as well as financial reporting. A graduate of the Columbus College of Art and Design with a bachelor's degree in fine arts and art history, Katie is currently pursuing a master's degree in fine arts as well as a master's degree in art education at the University of Cincinnati.

Amanda Checco

Amanda Checco
Assistant to the Director

Amanda Checco graduated in 2007 from Miami University with a BFA in printmaking and a concentration in graphic design, illustration and European cinema. Through the years she has performed lead roles in musical theatre, participated in international artist exchanges for printmaking and drawing, worked in retail sale of fine art jewelry, and held leadership roles in public art workshops both locally and abroad. Her current position encompasses many aspects of ArtWorks Administration, including all scheduling, organization, coordination, and correspondence for the Executive Director and Director of Programs. She also participates in ArtWorks special events, marketing, and in-house graphic design projects.

Alyssa Deutsch
Apprentice Coordinator

Alyssa is a Summer Intern, working as the Apprentice Coordinator for the Summer Program. She is in her 3rd year as an International Affairs major at Xavier University. As Apprentice Coordinator Alyssa strives to keep all Apprentices organized and accountable to ensure that their summer employment is as beneficial as possible for each individual, the staff and the community.
