VoiceWorks

in partnership with UC College-Conservatory of Music
A project of the 2006 and 2007 ArtWorks Summer Program

Apprentices in VoiceWorks 06 auditioned to be part of this group working with the UC College-Conservatory of Music Preparatory Department. In the first three weeks of the summer program, the apprentices learned a variety of songs that were part of their summertime-themed showcase. The group spent the second part of their summer performing for more than 1000 viewers in community centers and day camps. VoiceWorks represented ArtWorks at a July Reds' game by singing the National Anthem to a full stadium at the Great American Ballpark.

Two days into the summer 2007, VoiceWorks had already learned one of their songs perfectly: with harmonies and melodies intertwining, they sang with the illusion of utmost ease. The twelve Apprentices worked together after a day as well as if they had been an ensemble for years.

Of course, these beautifully sung songs did not arise from nothing. Days were spent practicing different snippets of songs again and again, but all of the polishing paid off. Whenever they ascended various stages on which they performed, they did it with ease and sang astoundingly.

Speaking of astounding, this is also a good adjective to describe the songs that the VoiceWorks Apprentices wrote themselves. They composed the lyrics, the melody and the harmony, collaborating to create this group’s swan song of sorts.
