The ArtWorks' Time Warner Cable Gallery is honored to present the sale of the Benjamin and Helen Allen Collection: 50 Years of Passion. The private collection consists of a diverse group of artists representative of the American experience. With an appreciation for landscapes, colorful abstract modern art, and preeminent Twentieth Century African American artists, The Allen's distinct collection spans 50 years and ranges from local favorites such as Paul Chidlaw and Robert Fabe to those of international renown such as Jean Michel Basquiat and David Driskell.
This exhibition presents opportunities for everyone from the curious art aficionado to those looking to make their first acquisition to enjoy artists the Allens have collected. Represented movements of the 20th century such as Abstract Impressionists, AfriCobra, and the Color-Field School have a strong presence in this collection.
The artists collected by this Cincinnati couple, present a portrait of the American experience. Artists such as Minnie Evans illustrate the indomitable spirit of American artists. Born in a cabin in North Carolina to a fourteen year old mother, Evans spent most of her life as housekeeper in the home of a wealthy family before she was "discovered" at the age of 70 by a graduate student. Her work would go on to be represented in such prestigious collections as the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York and the Getty Center in Los Angeles.
Evans' work is just one example of the compelling artists who are represented in the Benjamin and Helen Allen Collection. This collection highlights the varied interests of the Allen's and brings to the public an opportunity to own and enjoy artists that have had a profound impact on the couple.
