Mural Partner Responsibilities
Below is a detailed list of partner responsibilities that will ensure your neighborhood mural receives the level of support and community participation necessary for your mural to be a success!
PRE-MURAL
- Identify a mural wall with good visibility and in good condition (i.e., no moisture issues, no significant masonry issues)
- Identify a back-up mural wall
- Approach Building Owner for permission for mural; ensure he/she is agreeable to a community-oriented mural theme
- Get written letter of permission from Building Owner
- Notify adjacent property owners of mural project and coordinate any plans necessary (i.e., blocking off parking spaces in an adjacent parking lot)
- Confirm studio space for project; should include secure storage space, restroom, water source, an electric source and daily access for the artistic team.(It is ideal for the Project Manager to have his/her own key to the studio space for easy access.)
- Get written letter of permission from Studio Site Owner
- Determine who the key community representatives and stakeholders are (no more than 12) and ask them to participate in your mural committee; send their phone numbers and e-mails to ArtWorks
- Schedule and organize a minimum of 4 meetings with your mural committee and ArtWorks:
- Meeting #1 – Introductions; selecting a Lead Artist – April 4 – 15, 2011
- Meeting #2 – Brainstorming ideas with Lead Artist – April 18 – 29, 2011
- Meeting #3 – Draft design presentation – May 2 – June 3, 2011
- Meeting #4 – Final design presentation with teen Apprentice Artists – June 17 – 24, 2011 between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.
- Propose dates and times within the preferred schedule above and confirm these meetings with ArtWorks Staff
- Invite your mural committee to all meetings
- Give updates to Community Council / Neighborhood Business Council about the project
- Optional – Collect community surveys to gather input from the community at large
- Organize Community Support
- Provide a contribution of cash and/or in-kind resources totaling 10 – 20% of mural costs, based on your mural’s budget. ArtWorks will provide an anticipated budget by mid-January 2011. On average, murals cost $30,000. ArtWorks should receive your community contribution by completion of the project, or no later than August 2011.
- Potential donations include:
- Wall prep – Soda blasting services, power washing services or equipment
- Equipment – Scaffolding
- Supplies – Rollers, roller trays, paintbrushes, tarps, rags, paint storage containers, shade cloths, etc.
- Share your fundraising plan with ArtWorks
- Identify any contacts (individuals or local businesses) or ideas you have for fundraising and specify if contacts are targeted for monetary or in-kind donations
- Coordinate for development activities with ArtWorks Staff. Some best practices are: letter writing campaign to businesses and/or residents, hosting fundraising and awareness events that promote the project, publish information about the project and how to support it in community newsletters and/or Websites. ArtWorks can provide sample letters, remittance envelopes, tax-ID for donations, etc.
DURING MURAL
- Continue organizing community support/fundraising
- Invite community members and local business owners to stop by the mural site, see the progress and meet the team of artists
- Continue to promote the project in community newsletters and/or Websites
- Optional – Coordinate a second presentation of the final design for the community at large. (This can raise awareness and help with fundraising.)
- Optional – Coordinate the community to provide lunch, snacks, t-shirts, etc. for the artistic team to show your appreciation for their hard work
- Maintain communication with the ArtWorks Program Staff
- Make sure to let ArtWorks know of any questions or concerns you may have as the mural progresses
- Assist with troubleshooting any issues or concerns that arise
POST-MURAL
- Coordinate Mural Dedication
- Confirm a date, time and location for the event with ArtWorks Staff
- Create an invitation for community residents and promote the date in calendar listings or with an article in community newsletters and/or websites
- Schedule any desired entertainment or other programmed activities
- Coordinate a community representative to speak during the program about the mural and project
- Provide food and beverage, tables, chairs or other desired reception provisions
- Maintenance
- Ensure that community organizations and individuals maintain the mural (including, but not limited to, cleaning dirt from the mural, picking up trash from in front of the mural, and caring for landscaping)
- Contact ArtWorks in the event of any graffiti or vandalism, or upon change of wall-ownership
- Optional – Purchase and install fixtures to light your mural at night or landscape the area in front of your mural
