Tim Rollins Tim Rollins
Summer 2004

Tim Rollins is best known for his work with Kids of Survival (K.O.S.) in the South Bronx, NY. As a high school teacher in the Bronx, Mr. Rollins quickly formed a bond with his students and they began making art on their lunch break and after school. Eventually, with the help of an N.E.A. grant, the group was able to rent their own studio away from school for more intensive art making. The group, called K.O.S., soon gained international attention and has since been in hundreds of professionally curated shows. K.O.S. has become especially well known for their works surrounding classic literature, where they create highly conceptual art over the pages of the book they are focusing on.

In 2004, Rollins conducted a two-week workshop with fifteen Apprentice Artists to create three large-scale works based on the theme of freedom. The workshop included daily discussions, research, listening to freedom spirituals and speeches of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and reading selected literary works including "His Promised Land" by John P. Parker. The group watched the documentary series, "Eyes on the Prize" and visited the Rankin House in Ripley, Ohio, a famous Underground Railroad stop.

The FreedomWorks Project was created by ArtWorks and the Cincinnati Art Museum in tribute of the grand opening of the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in downtown Cincinnati. The final works created in the FreedomWorks project can be seen in the curated exhibition in the Cincinnati Art Museum's Sara Vance and Michelle Waddell Gallery in the new Cincinnati Wing. The exhibition is open to the public from (October 23, 2004 - March 13, 2005) October 23, 2004- February 13, 2005 . Click here to see more about the FreedomWorks project...
