Avondale Pride: We Rise from the Ashes

The Community Builders and ArtWorks partnered to bring a series of three murals to the new Avondale Town Center. Cedric Michael Cox, who designed the former Avondale Pride mural at the previous Town Center, designed the new installations inspired by on-the-ground conversations with Avondale community members about the identity of the neighborhood and aspirations for the future. Each mural integrates floral imagery, suggesting themes of beauty and prosperity, and silhouettes of families and children, inviting the viewer to see themselves in the composition. A rising phoenix is central to this installation, reflecting the essence of Avondale as a neighborhood built on strength and resilience. Kente cloth patterns color the background and symbolize the pride of Avondale’s African American residents. Two Teaching Artists led a team of twelve local Youth Apprentices, some of them Avondale residents, to create the murals at an offsite studio space while the town center was under construction. The murals were installed after the completion of construction. What other animals represent the essence of Avondale to you?
