SUMMARY:"Phronesis" Sculptural Installation Dedication
DESCRIPTION:Join ArtWorks and the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County to celebrate the completion of sculptural installation Phronesis\, Wednesday\, October 16 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at the downtown main branch (800 Vine St). ArtWorks is proud to have led the call to artists for this public art project. Free and open to the public. \nCreated by internationally acclaimed artist Jen Lewin\, Phronesis is a large-scale light sculpture on the South Plaza of the Main Library. Seven of the sculpture’s light pillars are installed outside the Library’s Vine Street entrance\, and a single interior light pillar is immediately inside the building’s atrium. \nDerived from Ancient Greek\, the word phronesis is defined by the Oxford English Dictionary\, opens a new window as “understanding” and “practical judgement.”  \nWith Phronesis\, Lewin looks both into the past and the future. Inspired by the search of Dr. Stephen Bertman\, a professor of Languages\, Literature\, and Cultures at the University of Windsor in Canada\, Lewin crafted eight large illuminated sculptures\, each representing a guiding principle of ancient Greek wisdom: \n\nHumanism\nThe Pursuit of Excellence\nThe Practice of Moderation\nSelf-Knowledge\nRationalism\nRestless Curiosity\nThe Love of Freedom\nIndividualism\n\nThese principles and their ancient roots remind us of the vast breadth of human knowledge\, curiosity\, and history\, much of which is preserved and shared through the Library. \nImage provided by the Library

This exciting milestone marks a new chapter for ArtWorks\, and we’re inviting you to be part of the celebration. \nPlease join us on Saturday\, April 26\, 2025\, from 1:00 to 4:00 PM\, for an afternoon of creativity\, live performances\, and the blooming Hannan ArtPark\, located just across from our new Creative Campus at 2429 Gilbert Ave\, Walnut Hills. This free community event is open to all. We hope you’ll join us! \nThe event will feature a unique ribbon-tying ceremony\, performances by Drums for Peace\, Mambo Combo\, and DanceFix\, and speeches from key community leaders. Attendees will also be able to participate in a variety of art-making activities hosted by ArtWorks’ Studio Artists and neighboring local businesses and organizations\, including the Cincinnati Art Museum and the Harriet Beecher Stowe House. Thanks to our friends at the Cincinnati Public Library\, we’re hosting “Prep\, Don’t Stress\,” an Apprentice Application and Interview Preparation & Information series. In these sessions\, you’ll learn more about the Apprentice Program\, work with ArtWorks Mural Studio artists on drawing a self-portrait\, and get interview practice where you can rehearse your answers and receive helpful feedback to prepare for the real thing. No materials are required\, just bring yourself!
