Purchase an ArtWorks Face Mask
Putting Talents to Use for the Good of the Community
ArtWorks is creating jobs for Youth Apprentices by employing them to make face masks for the community. Below, we have provided a simple way for you to order these face masks. Due to demand, we are prioritizing creating face masks for our region of Greater Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky and Southwest Indiana. Thank you for your patience.
Importance of Wearing Face Masks During the Pandemic
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is advising everyone to wear masks when out in public to protect against spreading COVID-19 along with the practice of social distancing. Most agree that the most effective masks include the following:
- Fit snugly and comfortably against the side of the face
- Is secured with ties or loops
- Includes multiple layers of fabric
- Allows to breathe freely
- Can be laundered and machined dried without changing shape
- Can be removed easily without touching front of mask
According to research, masks provide the highest protection from spreading the disease from infected individuals by blocking vapor droplets expelled from sneezing, coughing and/or speaking. For the wearer, the masks provide additional protection from exposure over and above social distancing.
About ArtWorks Face Masks
Examples of ArtWorks face masks. Prints will vary.
The face masks created by the ArtWorks’ Youth Apprentices have been designed to maximize protection, fit, and comfort based on the recommendations of the CDC, infectious disease researchers and the teaching artist Lindsey Whittle.
The pattern chosen comes in two sizes, medium and large, to create the best possible fit and coverage. Each mask includes multiple layers of protection, two layers of tightly woven cotton and two layers of fusible interfacing. The masks will be tightly secured through the use of two elastic straps, one that wraps around the head and one around the neck for a snug fit across the nose, mouth and sides.
The combination of cloth fabric and interfacing was chosen that allow for repeat washings without changing the shape or effectiveness of the masks. The use of tightly woven cotton fabrics has been shown to increase protection by blocking at least 50% of transmitted vapor droplets associated with COVID-19. The use of multiple layers of interfacing has been shown to increase protection to 70%. In addition to providing extra layers of protection and breathability, interfacing helps maintain garment shape and stability allowing for multiple use and washings.
In effort to add protection to recipients of ArtWorks’ mask, each mask will be treated with a disinfectant prior to distribution.
Each Adult Face Mask (medium or large) costs $12 per mask. For $20 per mask, ArtWorks will donate an additional mask to a local hero on your behalf.
ArtWorks Youth Apprentices are working in May to create face masks. ArtWorks will begin distributing the masks in June.
