Twenty-four summers ago, in 1997, I was a Youth Apprentice. It was a brand-new program in the City and I was hired to work in a job to do something I love!
Working at ArtWorks changed my life trajectory and solidified my career goals. ArtWorks also helped me stay in Cincinnati and I am confident our program develops and retains critical talent and strong leadership for our community. I am proud to be an example for other youth with my journey from Apprentice to CEO.
For the past 25 years, ArtWorks has empowered economic mobility and fueled social progress by hiring nearly 4,000 youth for work-based learning experiences and paying them a living wage.
ArtWorks transforms young people by connecting them to creative professional mentors and their city. The program extends beyond the artwork and includes enrichment workshops in resume writing, interviewing, and financial literacy as well as public speaking experience. ArtWorks makes a permanent mark on each Apprentice and they make a permanent mark on our community.
Last year, despite the challenges of the public health crisis and a youth unemployment rate of 14.3%, ArtWorks was able to adapt and provide meaningful jobs to youth to continue making art. Our community’s support allowed us to hire 123 Youth Apprentices and 68 Artists to safely create 75 public art projects including our 200th mural, Time Saved vs. Time Served.
The theme of our 2021 season is Stronger Together. Join us in celebrating our 25th anniversary by making your gift today to the Apprentice Promise Campaign or considering a recurring monthly donation. Your gift will help us create jobs throughout the year for more than 150 area youth. You are an important partner in this work, and we can’t do this without you!
