10 new downtown murals coming from ArtWorks

June 18, 2015, Local 12 WKRC

CINCINNATI (Joe Webb) — Once the weather dries up, a small army of young artists will transform some downtown spaces into works of art.

Artworks kicked off its summer program the week of June 15, and will create 10 new murals. Beer, boxing and James Brown are among this year’s subjects.

The building at Republic and Liberty will be the location of Artworks’ 100th mural; a tribute to Cincinnati champion Ezzard Charles. 10 big projects got underway, including Artworks’ first “digital” mural.

In an empty corner of the Christian Moerlein Bockfest Hall, artist Jim Effler was working with a group of students to take his design from the table to cover the wall outside. They are some of the 133 Artworks youth apprentices for summer 2015. Eliora Kirk came back for a second mural project. In 2014 she helped create “Shining Seas” on Newport’s Aquarium.
