The Early Bird

Saturday Hoops partnered with ArtWorks to create this mural in celebration of the vibrancy and resilience of Saturday Hoops participants and their families. Founded by Ed Berg in 2004, Saturday Hoops is a volunteer-run program of the Cincinnati Youth Collaborative to engage vulnerable youth through offering mentorships, physical activity, and healthy meals. Their motto, “Cheerful Givers, Hard Workers, and Overcomers” inspired muralist, Bongang, to design this vibrant mural for the side of the Over-the-Rhine Recreation Center, where the Saturday Hoops program is held. Bongang visited Cincinnati to engage with Hoops participants and volunteers, and was inspired by the feelings of love and support he felt from participants and volunteers. This mural celebrates the success of Hoops participants, success which is ultimately achieved through the participants’ hard work. The mural was painted by a team of ten local Youth Apprentices, including Saturday Hoops alumni, working under the direction of three local Teaching Artists. What have you worked to overcome in your life? Who in your life inspires you to work hard?
