Building Community

Pennrose partnered with ArtWorks to produce a mural that uplifts local history and inspires a sense of togetherness. Building Community, designed by members of the ArtWorks Mural Studio, celebrates the Black Business District and its story. It borrows inspiration from the Harriet Beecher Stowe house and the original Thatcher’s Fish and Poultry store. Throughout the mural, references to the items sold at Thatcher’s such as the fish and grocery elements can be found, with the people signifying the solidarity and strength the black community found in each other through times of discrimination. Ultimately, this mural aims to inspire connection with neighbors and honor the rich history of Walnut Hills.
