REFUGE: Waves to Wellness

The Academy of World Languages (AWL), Cincinnati Public Schools, the Community Learning Center Institute and ArtWorks partnered to create this mural as a welcoming beacon on the side of the AWL Wellness Center. AWL is a Preschool-8th grade citywide magnet program offering an environment of multinational diversity and instruction in Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian and English as a Second Language. AWL has students from over 35 different countries, and is a school of choice for families seeking for their child to learn a world language as well as for many refugee and immigrant families. As a Community Learning Center, AWL is a hub of educational, recreational, cultural, health, and civic partnerships, which optimize the conditions for student learning. ArtWorks engaged Baltimore-based artists, Jessie and Katey, to design this colorful, expressive mural to cultivate positive feelings and community pride at the wellness center. ArtWorks employed a team of ten local Youth Apprentices, many of whom were immigrants, to work under the direction of two local Teaching Artists to create this vibrant mural. Its bright colors and bold graphic lines welcome patients, families and residents into the wellness center. The abstract shapes are part of a universal visual language that can be interpreted by anyone, no matter what language you speak. The collaboration of smaller shapes to create one large composition is a metaphor for working together. What makes you feel welcome? How have you welcomed new people into your community?
