Cincinnati Inked Goods
During the summer of 2014, apprentices worked with a professional graphic designer or illustrator to develop temporary tattoos and letter-pressed posters celebrating our love for Cincinnati. The final products were sold at various outlets throughout the City and were showcased at MidPoint Music Festival in September. Apprentices experienced the design process through research, sketching, ideation, client presentations and idea refinements as they learned to use Adobe Illustrator to create prototypes. They also learned entrepreneurial structures as they worked through the process of understanding their customers, pricing items, identifying sales outlets and generating profits. This real-world experience of assisting a designer in the launch of their own product line provided hands-on experience with the design process and how to translate that work into a viable business model.
Superhero Activity Book
Also during the summer of 2014, apprentices designed and produced a unique children’s activity book that followed a group of young superheroes as they protect Cincinnati and promote the power of positivity. This special coloring book, filled with activities, is meant to be supportive and empowering to all children. For this project, a team of professional artists led a group of youth apprentices through the processes of planning, design, production, marketing, and distribution of a fully refined coloring book. The book’s narrative and imagery was created by the team and not only sought to celebrate the City of Cincinnati, but the amazing children who call Cincinnati home. Coloring books were for sale and are also given to kids participating in Hero Design Company.
Random Snacks of Kindness
In summer 2013, ArtWorks partnered with Frances Kroner, chef/owner of FEAST and an ArtWorks’ SpringBoard graduate, on our first youth entrepreneurial project: Random Snacks of Kindness. Frances cooked up a deliciously creative idea—a Ginger Coconut mix that gives back—and partnered with ArtWorks to launch the new snack line. It was available at local retailers and all proceeds from sales directly benefited ArtWorks. Click here to read more about this project.
